5th Graders Learn to CRACK THE CODE using Prime Factorization!
Students in Ms. Villalba's 5th grade class had fun learning about encryption... another way we use math in the real world! Students used prime factorization to crack a code and earn a prize. Beginning with 2-3 digit numbers, teams worked together to rename each number as the product of its prime number factors. They then used a code to find the letters that each number correlated to. Using the letters they had, groups worked together to decipher the class code. When they cracked the code, each student earned a prize.... 10 Terrific Tickets and a Yo-Yo!
