Arts Integration: Exploring Music's Influence and Black History Month

As a part of our Arts Integration program, Mrs. Devore worked with Mrs. Rutigliano's class to celebrate Black History Month and influential figures in history.  As our third graders continue to work on essay-writing and writing with a purpose, they investigated the story and lyrics of Stevie Wonder's song "Happy Birthday".  They explored how Stevie Wonder used his song and celebrity status to advocate that Martin Luther King Jr's birthday become a federally observed holiday.  By looking at the lyrics through the lens of persuasive essay-writing, they were able to find the thesis statement and supporting evidence provided by Wonder, as well as the process through which a holiday becomes nationally approved.

Students also connected to the characteristics and traits presented by both Stevie Wonder and Martin Luther King Jr., and the influence these figures have had on this country and their lives.
