6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from the PAL club, the GSA, and HBTV attended the Anti-Bullying Conference at Hofstra University on Monday, October 7.
The event began with a breakout session during which students participated in a conversation about creating a world in which everyone could be themselves. Students also learned about different types of bullies and discussed how to lead other students in being upstanders, rather than bystanders. Laura Campbell, a representative of a crisis hotline, spoke with students about certain anti-bullying laws that are in place, but emphasized that the real work in creating a more safe and welcoming environment begins with the students. At the end of the conference, attendees also got to meet NY Giants former punter, Sean Landeta, who spoke about his experiences with bullying.
Ms. O’Neill, Ms. Lowe, Ms. deLauzon, and Ms. Nunziato all agreed that attending the conference was a great opportunity for Thompson students to collaborate with other student-leaders across Long Island. The event provided our students with excellent tools to continue their work making HBT the best it can be!
