Students are currently engrossed in a literary essay unit as part of Columbia Teachers College Writing Project. Students are reading like writers and examining stories in search of themes, and the literary moves authors make to strengthen their own writing. Throughout the unit, students will work on developing claims, gathering and weighing evidence as well as planning, drafting, editing, and revising three separate essays.
With a thematic essay under their belt, students began to analyze author's craft, looking at techniques narrative writers use in order to achieve goals such as developing characters, describing the setting, raising the stakes, and building suspense, to name a few! As they work collaboratively with their writing partners, students will work to produce two more essays they can be proud of.
