The third grade was very busy preparing for the Lunar New Year this year. While studying China, they learned so many unique and wonderful, cultural traditions that people from China partake in. One of their favorite things about the New Year was the traditional Dragon Dance. They created their own dragons in art class with Mrs. Beach.
There is one legend that tells of the monster Nian, who was dangerous and always attacked humans the night before the new year. All the children and grownups were scared of him. They wanted to get rid of this dangerous animal. They needed to come up with ideas to scare him away. Nian is afraid of bright colors and loud noises. In order to survive Nian, the Chinese families started to decorate their homes with bright red colors and set off firecrackers. Because of this legend, they created fire cracker, noise makers and many decorations to bring good luck to WW.
Most importantly, they spread kindness and positivity by giving out red hong bao envelopes filled with affirmations that each student at WW was happy to receive during the Lunar Parade.
