First Grade STEM Project

These first grade students first brainstormed several ideas of things they could construct; a tower, castle, garage, treehouse, etc, and then they got to work. Following the activity the students shared how they designed and built their creations, and then discussed the strategies they used when building. For example, some students made a base first, some realized that they couldn’t make a top level too high, some discovered that it was helpful to make triangular structures for stronger support. Whatever they did, they had a blast! First grade students building a structure out of toothpicks and marshmallows. First grade students building a structure out of toothpicks and marshmallows.
