Syosset CSD Partners With Mount Sinai South Nassau to Offer COVID-19 Rapid Testing

The Syosset School District has entered into a partnership with Mount Sinai South Nassau to provide a COVID-19 rapid test satellite location at the Syosset High School campus, located at 70 South Woods Road, Syosset. This partnership will provide a convenient location for students, their immediate family members, and District staff members to obtain a rapid COVID-19 test. The satellite location will open on Tuesday, December 8, and tests will be by appointment-only.

Mount Sinai South Nassau will offer the Sofia SARS rapid COVID-19 antigen test (which has a higher degree of accuracy than many of the rapid tests currently in use) to members of the Syosset learning community, which includes District students and their immediate family members, as well as staff members. Appointments will be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Minors must have parental permission and be accompanied by an adult to be tested. Tests will be administered by a nurse under the direction of Mt. Sinai South Nassau and will take place in a drive-up format under a tent outside the school building. Sample evaluation will take place in an adjacent trailer and results will be available in about 15 minutes. The cost of the testing will be underwritten by the individual’s family health insurance and health data will be maintained by Mt. Sinai South Nassau, not the School District. There will be no out-of-pocket cost.

The site will not be staffed as an urgent care facility. Persons experiencing symptoms like fever, cough or loss of taste and smell should immediately seek medical attention.

New York State Department of Health’s “return to school” protocol requires students and staff members who show potential symptoms of COVID-19 to produce a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result before returning to school. The satellite testing location at Syosset High School will provide a quick and convenient method for community members to obtain the test. Use of this testing site will be on a voluntary basis. Appointments to schedule a test can be made by calling (516) 364-5799.

In addition to providing a convenience to the community, the COVID-19 satellite test location at Syosset High School provides the school district with additional capacity to satisfy the State’s testing requirement should New York State designate the region as a “micro-cluster.” Under the strategy recently outlined by Governor Cuomo, schools that fall into Yellow, Orange or Red Zones would be required to test a certain portion of the school population in order for school to remain open for in-person instruction.

“As the prevalence of COVID-positive cases has recently risen sharply, we have learned of difficulties obtaining appointments for testing, and long wait times,” remarked Dr. Tom Rogers, Superintendent of Schools. “We hope this partnership decreases wait times for families in the short term, and creates additional capacity in the event a Yellow Zone designation makes additional testing necessary to preserve in-person instruction for students.”

The Syosset Central School District would like to thank the entire team at Mount Sinai South Nassau for providing this service to the community, and for their continued selfless efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
