WRITING + STEM + PARENTS = Great Learning and FUN!!
South Grove’s Second Grade was excited to welcome parents into an exciting science activity: “Catapult Challenge!” Students have been developing their nonfiction writing skills by writing lab reports. This is a science-themed unit of their Teacher’s College writing curriculum. Second grade has also been developing their STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Students incorporated both into a Catapult Challenge. During science students designed catapults out of popsicle sticks. Students then experimented with how the variable of weight affected the distance that their load traveled. Parents and other special people joined the entire second grade in the school gym to experiment with their catapults, measure, and record in their lab reports.
