Unity Hallway Opens
Both buildings of South Grove Elementary School were officially connected with a long anticipated walkway. The short distance between the Annex (home to Kindergarten through Second Grade) and the Main Building (home to Second through Fifth Grade) has been bridged with a newly-constructed hallway. Construction began over the summer and its completion was commemorated with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 17th. Representatives from all corners of the South Grove School Community turned out to celebrate. Guests mingled in the balloon decorated gym, visited the PTA book fair, and enjoyed a slideshow of South Grove through the years. Our school principal, Ms. Mi Jung An, served as the Master of Ceremonies and guided us through the brief program. The school’s Color Guard, representing the Student Council, opened the ceremony by leading participants in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students from the South Grove chorus were accompanied by members of the school band in performing the South Grove School song. The District’s Superintendent, Dr. Tom Rogers, and Mr. Andrew Feldman, a School Board of Education Trustee, spoke on behalf of the Administration and Board. Highlights from the history of South Grove was shared by a teacher on behalf of the South Grove Staff. The final speakers were our past and current P.T.A. co-presidents, Jyoti Agrawal and Lisa Adragna (respectively), who spoke on behalf of the parents who had advocated for the completion of the walkway. The strength of our school community was evident as speakers shared their appreciation for the partnership between the Staff, Parents, Administration and Board.
Of course, Grover -- our school mascot -- also made an appearance for the formal ribbon cutting. With a supersize ceremonial scissor and a large team of school community representatives, Ms. An cut the ribbon. Guests were then invited to sign the poster-sized panels in the walkway, joining their positive messages with those of the students and staff.
With the official opening of the Unity Walkway, what we always knew to be true in our hearts has been made concrete: South Grove is ONE!
