8th to 9th Grade Transition

Dear 8th Grade Parents/Guardians,

Ninth grade transition is in full swing! Our guidance counselors have begun presenting 9th grade course options, and your child has received two important worksheets, a 9th Grade Departmental Elective Worksheet and a 9th Grade Planning Worksheet. The next step in the transition process includes optional evening Transition Workshops. Families are invited to participate in sessions facilitated by counselors and middle school building administrators about the program planning process in order to walk through the worksheets linked above, experience the informational presentation shared with students during the school day, and glean ideas for their own child’s schedule.

South Woods Transition Workshops will be offered on the dates listed below.

Tuesday, January 23rd 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM & Thursday, January 25th 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

For planning purposes, please sign up for one of two available workshop slots using this SW Transition Workshop Sign-Up Form.

This will allow us to determine group sizes and locations for our conversations. Students are welcome to attend, however all information shared at the Transition Workshop will also be shared directly with students in school. Following the Transition Workshops, the following steps will take place in late January and throughout February:

● Late January: Academic course placements will be completed and uploaded to the Campus Portal and will be viewable as “Course Registration” beginning January 25th. Please log in during this window to review your child’s recommended 9 th grade academic program by clicking on the “Course Registration: 23-24 Syosset High School” link on the left side of the Portal screen. Please take some time to review the Syosset High School Curriculum Guide with your child, to read a description of their recommended core academic courses and to review elective choices. This is the information that will be used during your child’s guidance appointment.

● Late January/February: Students will meet individually with their guidance counselor to create their schedule; students will receive their appointments in school. Parents may participate by phone if they wish. We ask that you continue to check with your child regarding the date and time of their appointment, and let them know if you plan to join by phone so that the counselor can reach out to you. Please keep in mind that the school day is fluid and appointments may be delayed or need to be rescheduled.

More information regarding how and when individual students will be scheduled for their appointments will be communicated separately.

Please continue to view the Syosset High School eBook, which Dr. Durante shared earlier this morning.

Thank you for joining us in what we are certain will be a rewarding planning opportunity for you and your child.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Guidance Office.

Sincerely, Michelle L. Burget, South Woods Principal
