October 23rd, 2023

October 6th, 2023

Dear South Woods Families,

It’s hard to believe that October is upon us! We are enjoying watching our students grow and change with the seasons and have lots of exciting learning and extracurricular activities in store this month, culminating with Halloween and our traditional Halloween Walk-A-Thon. Stay tuned for upcoming messages from our Student Council about this and other events this month!

Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
  • The South Woods Spirit Squad is encouraging the whole community to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Friday, October 6th!

Say Something
  • This week in Advisory, students will learn that speaking with a trusted adult such as a parent, teacher, or counselor is the best thing they can do if they are concerned about a friend or a school safety situation. Teachers will remind students of how to use our anonymous reporting system, Say Something, in the event that a trusted adult is not available.
Successful Book Fair
  • Many thanks to the South Woods PTSA for sponsoring a fantastic in-person Book Fair. Our students were thrilled with the selection of books, posters, and a host of other fun items.
7th Grade Trip
  • Seventh graders are looking forward to their trip to Urban Air Adventure Park on October 27th. Team teachers will provide more detail.

Cell Phone Do's and Don'ts
  • Cell Phones: Our school rule is “off and away during the day,” except when permitted by a teacher and during downtime at lunch. Students will be reminded in the hallways and common areas to keep their phones away. Students who struggle with the rules regarding cell phones may have their phones taken away for the day and/or a parent may be asked to come and pick up the device. Here are some additional do’s and don’ts for when cell phone use is permitted by a teacher:
    • DO use your phone responsibly as a communication and educational tool.
    • DON’T use private social media during the school day.
    • DON’T use your phone to harass or intimidate others. Students who violate the Code of Conduct or Acceptable Use Policy may lose their cell phone privileges.
    • DON’T record or photograph classroom activities, classmates, or teachers without express permission. This is a violation of privacy.
    • DON’T avoid the Health Office. Texting a parent to be picked up from school is not permitted. All early dismissals must take place through the Health Office or the Attendance Office.

  • Large backpacks must be unpacked and stored in lockers. Students may carry a smaller string bag or side tote not to exceed 8” x 12” size for their smaller belongings.

Join the PTSA
  • The South Woods PTSA is an instrumental partner in providing all kinds of programming for our students, including author visits, assembly programs, and special school events such as Multicultural Week. We are grateful for our continued partnership and encourage all to join here: PTSA Membership. Membership is the PTSA’s primary fundraiser, and your support helps us bring important programs to the school as well as provide special events for each grade level. Membership also gives you access to the DirectorySpot app. For more information, see this form.
      • For questions regarding membership or DirectorySpot, please reach out to the SWPTSA directly at southwoodsptsa@gmail.com.

  • Passing Time and Lockers: Students have four minutes to travel from class to class and are expected to be on time. Students should by now be able to organize their materials and supplies in such a way that they are on time for class with what they need. Please feel free to contact your child’s counselor if you feel they need additional support.

Extra Help

  • Lunch Options: Outdoor recess and lunch workshops are underway, and Advisory teachers will continue to share a growing list of options for students including Library passes, academic workshops, and enrichment.
  • Recess Safety: Recess presents an opportunity for all students to unwind and play safely. There are recess teachers/supervisors at all times monitoring the field and play area. Students who witness anything of concern at recess must report it to the recess teacher immediately. Please remind your child that school rules apply on the playground, and that unsafe language and behavior will not be tolerated and may result in consequences including the loss of recess privileges.

Thank you as always for your trust in us as we work together to ensure a successful, safe year for all!
