• What is Universal Prekindergarten (UPK)?

The mission of the Syosset Central School District is to prepare students to thrive in both the future we imagine and one which may evolve in ways yet to be envisioned. We believe in enabling all students to realize their full intellectual potential and to inspire lifelong learners. We aim to instill a passion for learning that develops students who are agile, creative, and adaptable learners. Our instruction not only increases students’ knowledge, but their capacity to think using programs that are innovative, engaging, and effective.

UPK in Syosset provides students with the very important opportunity to grow in a richly diverse and engaging environment where play-based learning is at the heart of the work. Purposeful play helps children make discoveries, build knowledge, experiment with literacy and math, and learn to self-regulate and interact with others in socially appropriate ways.

All learning for Syosset CSD UPK is guided by the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards (also  known as NYSPLS). The New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards: A Resource for School Success consolidates all learning standards for four-year-old students into one document. This is the updated version of the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core Learning Standards, published in 2012.
