The District is well underway with Phase 2 Capital Construction projects designed to provide much-needed updates to our facilities and important security enhancements. Please monitor this section of the District website to stay abreast of the work in process and get a first-hand look at the exciting changes coming. Please use the left-hand navigation menu to access the milestone tracking chart, weekly construction updates, photos, community advisories, presentations and other information regarding the construction work.
There are several Phase 2 construction projects that began immediately after classes ended in June. Many of these projects, such as renovation of the high school science labs, expansion of parking lots at Berry Hill, Baylis and Walt Whitman, the relocation of the Walt Whitman playground, renovation of the pool deck, and paving work to improve traffic flow in front of the high school, are expected to be complete by the time classes resume in September (barring any extenuating circumstances, such as long periods of inclement weather). There are, however, a few projects that are much larger in scope for which the work will extend into the 2019-2020 school year. These projects include the turf field, the high school fitness center, and enclosing the walkway at the entrance of the high school to create a vestibule.
Although the fitness and track construction work will continue once classes resume, please be assured the District will work to minimize disruption to students’ learning. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority and a secure environment will be maintained. Areas in which work will take place will be segregated from the rest of the building and temporary fencing will enclose construction areas.
Please note that in order to maintain a safe environment and to complete the construction work in the most efficient manner, the community will not have access to the track and field area or the tennis courts this summer. The pool will also be closed while renovations are completed to the pool deck. The high school weight room will be relocated to H.B. Thompson Middle School for the summer and will be returned to the high school in a temporary location in the fall while work is completed on the new fitness center.
As the turf field will not be complete in time for the start of the fall sports season, adjustments to scheduling of home games will be necessary. As is common when schools are undergoing projects of this scale, J.V. and varsity “home” football games will be played at the fields of neighboring Districts. We expect this will be the case for the 2019 Homecoming game. As soon as schedules and locations are finalized, we will update the community.
The District is committed to communicating our progress regularly during construction. Please monitor this section of the website for frequent updates and important information regarding the work being done.
We recognize this work will result in some short-term inconveniences and we appreciate your patience as the work is completed. We are excited for the much-needed improvements to our facilities, and we hope you share in our excitement for the advancements to come!
