Delays and School Closings



On occasions when schools must be closed or school openings will be delayed due to inclement weather or other emergency conditions, parents will be notified by the District's automated telephone and email system, and a message will be posted on the homepage of the District website and the Syosset Central School District Facebook page.

Additionally, announcements will be made on Cablevision News 12, FiOS1 and the following radio stations beginning as early as 6:30AM:

In the event school is closed due to inclement weather:

  • Morning and afternoon SCOPE is cancelled.
  • Before and after school activities are cancelled. This includes any special events planned unless otherwise noted in the email and phone communications.
  • If necessary, you will receive a separate communication regarding rescheduling of events and/or activities.

 

As of March 22, 2018, the District has used a total of 5 snow days. One snow day is built into the calendar. May 24th, May 25th and March 29th are now designated as instructional days for all District students. June 15, 2018 is now designated as an instructional day for elementary and middle school students, and as a rating day for Syosset High School (staff reports only).

 

In the event of a 2 hour delay to due inclement weather:

  • Morning SCOPE is cancelled. Afternoon SCOPE will continue as scheduled.
  • Before school activities are cancelled.
  • Buses will operate on a 2 hour delay in the morning only. Bus pick-up time will be 2 hours after the normally scheduled pick-up time. Afternoon drop-off time will not change.
  • Afternoon and evening activities will continue as planned unless otherwise noted in the email and phone communications.
  • Please continue to monitor the District website and be alert for additional communications throughout the morning. If weather conditions deteriorate, it may be necessary to close schools for the day.

 

In the event of an accelerated dismissal due to inclement weather:

  • The high school will be dismissed at 12:30 pm.
  • The middle school will be dismissed promptly at 2:46 pm. Please be prepared for buses to arrive slightly early at their designated stops.
  • The elementary schools will be dismissed promptly at 3:15 pm. Please be prepared for buses to arrive slightly early at their designated stops.
  • All afternoon and evening activities will be cancelled. This includes any special events planned unless otherwise noted in the email and phone communications.
  • If necessary, you will receive a separate communication regarding rescheduling of events and/or activities.
  • There will be no late bus.

 

In the event of cancellation of afterschool activities:

  • Afternoon SCOPE will continue as scheduled.
  • All afternoon and evening activities will be cancelled. This includes any special events planned unless otherwise noted in the email and phone communications.
  • If necessary, you will receive a separate communication regarding rescheduling of events and/or activities.
  • There will be no late bus.

 

In the event of a relocation or evacuation:

  • A communication will be sent out to parents/guardians immediately, and additional communications will be sent to keep you apprised of the situation.
  • During a relocation or evacuation, there is no process for signing out students. For everyone’s safety and to ensure our operations run smoothly, please refrain from coming to the school building.
  • Once students have safely arrived at the alternate location, parents/guardians will be provided with instructions for picking up and signing out students if you should choose to do so.
  • Bus transportation home from the alternate location will commence at the regularly scheduled dismal time.
