SHS Student's Research Published in Prestigious Scientific Journal

Michelle Liu
Congratulations to Syosset High School's Michelle Liu, who had her research published in PLOSOne, a prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science.

Working under the supervision of Angion Biomedica Corp.'s Dr. Prakash Narayan, PhD, Michelle and her colleagues demonstrated that certain biomarkers can be used to diagnose fairly accurately the presence of tumors in early disease. Fatty liver disease has reached epidemic proportions in both the United States and in Asian countries. Left unchecked, fat accumulation in the liver can lead to inflammation in that organ, scarring (fibrosis), cirrhosis and finally hepatocellular cancer. Meticulous research conducted by Michelle and her colleagues demonstrates that hepatocellular carcinoma can occur much earlier in this spectrum; i.e. patients presenting with steatohepatitis (fat and inflammation of the liver) can have liver tumors. Early diagnosis and intervention is key to survival.

Michelle was just a rising freshman when she conducted the research for the article titled ”Supervised learning reveals circulating biomarker levels diagnostic of hepatocellular carcinoma in a clinically relevant model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis; An OAD to NASH.” Michelle plans on being back in the lab at Angion this summer!
