Robbins Lane Elementary School third-grade classes participated in a wonderful interactive workshop about Chinese culture provided by singer/songwriter Patricia Shih. The workshop served as a nice extension to the curriculum as Shih began by echoing one of her original songs while incorporating Chinese words, some of which were new to the students and some that they had already learned in class. Shih also used hand gestures to lead the children in movement and conducted a game in which students were asked to identify some Chinese artifacts such as jewelry, instruments, dolls, fans, and kites. Shih also shared stories, history and known superstitions of China. Some students even had the opportunity to play instruments dressed as characters from her stories. As a finale, all of the students took part in the Ribbon and Lion dances. It was a great way to prepare for the upcoming Chinese New Year and a fabulous way to end the workshop.
