Kind kindergarteners celebrated the completion of their Teachers College Reading Unit, “We are Readers” with a parade in the Berry Hill School library where students donned their “favorite storybook necklace.”  The ultimate goal of the unit was to develop students who “want” to read and who “believe” they can!  Students began the unit by reading “information” texts in order to discover that reading is all around them. They then progressed to emergent storybooks such as Caps for Sale, The Carrot Seed, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff that were read aloud to them. Kindergarteners also had the opportunity to reread the stories over and over again through the pictures and their words that approximated the actual text during independent and partnership experiences.  The celebration culminated with a presentation of reading certificates and bookmarks by Mrs. Mannion that celebrated students “Unlocking the Key to Reading!”  Thank you to Mrs. DiMaggio and Ms. O’Connor for celebrating their kindergarteners’ first reading experiences of their school career!
